Today we went to Shamian Island. It's a sandbank island in the Liwan District of Guangzhou. The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing Dynasty government in the 19th century. It's sort of famous in the adoption world because the U.S. Consulate was located there from 1990 to 2005 so families would stay on the island while they were in China completing their adoptions. Even though the consulate has moved, Shamian Island is still a beautiful place with unique architecture (compared to the rest of China) that holds so much adoption history.
At the White Swan Hotel where many adoptive families stayed over the years. |
I've seen so many families share pictures of their newly adopted children with this statue. We of course had to find it and take our own picture but Cabot wasn't feeling it. These are the best I could get - haha!
This kid will just sit down anywhere - such a goofball! |

We had a pretty chill evening.
Tomorrow is our consulate appointment!
